Company History
A Starwood Timeline
In just a few years, Starwood has grown into one of the leading hotel and leisure companies in the world. Take a look back and see just how far we have come.
1991 Barry Sternlicht forms Starwood Capital Partners in Chicago backed by high net worth families specializing in real estate acquisitions.
1993 Starwood Capital buys its first hotels, and by 1994, it owns interests in 8,000 rooms in more than 30 properties.
1995 Starwood Capital acquires the debt of a distressed NYSE listed company called Hotel Investors Trust, "a paired share" REIT in which Barry saw potential. The total market value of equity was $8 million. Through the contributions of assets, debt and cash, Starwood Capital took control of Hotel Investors and renamed it Starwood Lodging. We kept its NYSE stock symbol, HOT. In June, the company's recapitalization raises $270 million to deleverage the entity.
Starwood stock rises 72.46% on the year.
1996 Starwood Lodging moves its headquarters from Los Angeles, California to Phoenix, Arizona.
The company expands rapidly by buying single units and small portfolios at deep discounts to replacement cost, including the Doral Inn, now the W New York.
Stock rises 85.30% on the year
1997 Starwood purchases three Westin Regina resorts in Mexico, its first international properties, and 15 full-service hotels from Flatley Company/Tara Hotels.
In September, Starwood Lodging announces an agreement to purchase Westin Hotels & Resorts for $1.8 billion.
In October, Starwood Lodging announces an agreement to purchase ITT Sheraton Corporation for $14.3 billion, acting as a white knight against a hostile bid from Hilton. Starwood is set to become a global enterprise.
Starwood stock ends the year up by 57.48%.
1998 In January, Starwood Lodging completes the acquisition of Westin Hotels & Resorts. With the completion of the purchase, Starwood Lodging is renamed Starwood Hotels & Resorts.
Starwood purchases four full-service, luxury properties in Aspen, Colorado; Houston, Texas; New York City and Washington, DC for stock. The New York City property is eventually sold and the other three become St. Regis hotels.
In February, Starwood completes the acquisition of ITT Sheraton Corporation. Simultaneously, with the closing, Starwood sells its yellow page business for $2 billion to a Dutch company, VNU. Starwood's portfolio now includes more than 650 hotels and resorts in more than 70 countries worldwide.
In March, Starwood is removed from the S&P 500 as no REITs are allowed in the index.
Starwood moves its headquarters to White Plains, New York in May.
The first W Hotel opens in December in New York City. The W brand is designed to offer the personality and individuality of an independent, one-of-a-kind hotel, while guaranteeing the reliability and superior level of amenities and services that business travelers require. W features casually elegant guestrooms and a hip, urban style.
1999 In January, Starwood changes its corporate form from an REIT to a C-Corporation and reduces its dividend from $2.20 to $0.60 to better match the dividends of peers such as Hilton and Marriott.
Starwood sells the Caesars gaming interests it had acquired in the ITT Sheraton deal to Park Place Entertainment for $3 billion cash.
Starwood acquires Vistana, Inc., a vacation ownership company, to establish an immediate presence in the growing vacation ownership market.
