Ilios Noche
The 2004 winner of Best New Restaurant still has us smiling. Chef-owners, and graduates of the Culinary Institute of America, Stratos Lambos and Angelo Kaltsounis produce food that is as compelling as it is flavorful, while Frank Kaltsounis, the French Culinary-trained pastry chef, makes whimsical desserts in-house.

The year 2004 brought with it several new dining spots in the South Charlotte area as well, among them an innovative little place just outside the 485 beltway. Three young but talented chefs teamed to open ilios noche, tucked into the Rea Village shopping center off Providence Road. Ilios, open 6 a.m.-10 p.m., offers homemade pastries and coffee in the morning and lunch and dinner fare the rest of the day. At lunchtime there is counter service where you order your meal and then find a table; at dinner the wait staff comes to you. The menu features Mediterraneanstyle fare with a heavy influence of Greek specialties. Favorites include the rosemary lamb in homemade pita, Greekfried potatoes dressed with oregano and grated Parmesan, and a classic Greek cheese starter called Saganaki made from Graviera cheese bathed in ouzo and extra virgin olive oil. If you're feeling adventurous, try the tender wood-grilled octopus. If your palate is more pedestrian, go with pizza, soups, salads or sandwiches and plan to save room for homemade pastry for dessert. The restaurant offers a full bar, a children's menu and a decent wine list. Takeout and off-premise catering are also available. |
