Restaurant Description |
 |
Serving the finest selection of seafood in the nation’s capital, Sea Catch reserves the freezer strictly for ice cream. The restaurant is noted for its soft- shell crabs, 10-count gulf Shrimp; the extensive selection of farm-raised shellfish, as well as the impressive quality of hard-to-find seasonal fish. Our crab cakes are remarkable and all lump crab meat, attesting to the fact that nothing on the menu is ever fried or breaded.
Our wine program at the Sea Catch Restaurant is based on offering our guests a diverse selection of varietals and styles from regions around the world that please all palates while complimenting the creations of Executive Chef George Chaffman! The History of the Sea Catch RestaurantHistorians recognize the Canal Square Building as "the birthplace of the original computer."
The building was originally built in 1842 to serve as a shipping warehouse for barge traffic on the bustling C&O Canal. It later served as a coopers shop. However, the Canal Square building gained its full historical status when Herman Hollerith converted the structure into a factory for manufacturing & printing punched card tabulating machines.
Hollerith’s punched card tabulating machine shortly proved their worth. By using these machines in the 1890 census, the government was able to shave 2 years and 5 million dollars off of the project as compared with previous censuses.
With such a success, it is no wonder that Hollerith’s Tabulating Machine Company was merged with two others to eventually create, in 1924, the "International Business Machines Corporation" or IBM. In 1984, IBM recognized the Canal Square Building as a historic site.
Today guests to the restaurant are invited to honor the history of the building, while appreciating its present incarnation as home to the Sea Catch Restaurant and several art galleries. Please take a moment to view a commemorative plaque, an original punched card plate and a pictorial display of Hollerith’s achievements during your visit. |

| "The Sea Catch is a handsome, brick walled place, but its great attraction is its view of the C&O Canal. Tables on the balcony practically hang over the towpath." --Washington Post |
