A Brief History of Shanty Creek Resort & Club Summit Village In the 1960’s the high, tree-green hills and curving valleys surrounding Bellaire in Michigan's Antrim County provided inspiration to build a challenging ski and golf resort. This vision of entrepreneur Roy Deskin became the initial Shanty Creek. After more than a decade of building and operating this resort, the properties including the main lodge, the golf pro shop, four chalets, and the 480 acres of golf course and ski areas were sold in 1978 to the Hilton chain of convention centers and hotels. They provided improvements to both ski and golf venues and added amenities to the property. Schuss Village In 1968 a Chicago stockbroker, Daniel Iannotti, opened his own version of a friendly European hamlet, a ski and golf resort patterned after those in Colorado - just down the road from Shanty Creek. He called the resort Schuss Mountain. Within a decade it too had grown to include an 18-hole golf course woven into the hilly, wooded landscape. In 1986, Club Resorts, Inc, having purchased both properties, merged the two resorts. The resort and guests alike benefited from the opening, in 1985, of the Arnold Palmer designed “Legend” golf course. The merged properties also continued to expand in creating club memberships and adding fine dining venues to the resort. Cedar River Village Private investors purchased the resort in 1997. They moved quickly to embark upon a multi-million dollar expansion which included a third “Village” with a newly constructed suite hotel, a fourth golf course, condominiums and enhancements to the Schuss Mountain skiing area. The new golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf opened in 1999. Very recently, in March of 2006, Trinidad Resort & Club, LLC, a subsidiary of Apex Oil Company purchased the Shanty Creek Resort & Club. Trinidad brings a wealth of experience in ski and golf resorts. The Apex Oil organization formerly owned Copper Mountain Ski Resort in Colorado. The history of the Shanty Creek Resort & Club is rich with vision, investment and growth. In the short term those who are part of our team will know that their knowledge and skills have been tested.
